The Texas A&M Men’s Tennis Team Falls Short in New York City Tournament

The No. 12 men’s tennis team of Texas A&M University participated in the ITA Indoor Championships in New York City from February 16th to 18th with an unblemished record. However, they faced defeat in two matches against ranked opponents – the No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs in the quarterfinals and the No. 14 Arizona Wildcats in the consolation bracket.

In their opening match on February 16th, the Aggies contested the No. 4 South Carolina Gamecocks. Despite losing the doubles point and trailing 1-0 before the singles matches, the team executed a remarkable comeback, claiming victory in four consecutive singles matches, including a crucial upset by junior Giulio Perego over freshman Jelani Sarr, resulting in a 4-1 triumph.

Advancing to the quarterfinals on February 17th, the Aggies encountered the TCU Horned Frogs. Although they initially secured a lead in doubles play, the team ultimately fell short in singles matches, with only one victory from sophomore Togan Tokac. The Horned Frogs emerged victorious with a 4-2 score, thus ending the Aggies’ aspirations of progressing to the semifinals.

Subsequently, in the consolation bracket on February 18th, the Aggies confronted the No. 14 Arizona Wildcats. Despite claim the doubles point, they were unable to secure success in the singles matches, culminating in a 4-1 defeat to Arizona.

Presently with a 7-2 record, the Aggies will now regroup for their forthcoming matches on Sunday, February 25th, at the Mitchell Tennis Center against the Pepperdine Waves and A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.
