The King’s Academy girls’ basketball team fell just short in their quest for a third consecutive regional title after a hard-fought game against Seffner Christian Academy on Thursday night. Despite their best efforts, the Lions were unable to secure a victory, ultimately losing 47-42 to the Crusaders.
Coach Chris Race, known for his unwavering belief in his team, faced a challenging season with a young and inexperienced squad, as they battled injuries and illnesses without any seniors on the roster. Despite these obstacles, Race remained determined to maintain the high standards set for the team, which had seen recent success including back-to-back regional titles.
The game saw the Lions struggle to find their offensive rhythm, only managing to score nine points in the first quarter and trailing 16-15 at halftime. Junior Brielle George expressed that nerves played a factor in their slow start, acknowledging the pressure of the high-stakes game. However, junior guard Julia Vazquez managed to provide a much-needed boost for the team with a crucial 3-pointer in the third quarter, tying the score at 26-all.
Despite their efforts, the Crusaders were able to gain the upper hand, extending their lead and ultimately securing the win. King’s Academy showed resilience, making a late push in the fourth quarter and coming within three points of tying the game. Unfortunately, they were unable to complete the comeback, bringing an end to their season with a final record of 19-10.
Looking ahead, the team remains optimistic about their future prospects, with junior Sophia Kateris expressing confidence in their ability to bounce back and compete at a high level in the future. With a roster comprised of new talent still finding their footing, the team remains determined to learn from this experience and return stronger next season.
In the broader scope of the playoffs, other notable results included Doral Academy securing a 72-50 victory over Boca Raton, Sports Leadership & Management defeating Somerset-Canyons 84-55, and Miami Christian emerging victorious with a 67-45 win over Berean Christian.
Although it was a disappointing end for the King’s Academy girls’ basketball team, they are commended for their resilience and sportsmanship throughout the season. As they reflect on their journey, they are undoubtedly set to return with a renewed determination and drive to compete once again at the highest level.
