Colton High School Girls’ Basketball Falls Short in CIF Division 5AA Title Game

The Colton girls’ basketball team demonstrated an impressive performance in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs, reaching the section finals for the first time in program history. Notable victories include a 20-point win over district rival Grand Terrace, as well as one-point wins over Desert Hot Springs and La Mirada.

However, in the Division 5AA championship game against Adelanto at Colony High School, Colton struggled to maintain momentum and ultimately fell 64-35. Adelanto’s size advantage allowed them to dominate in rebounding, finishing with a 61-39 edge in total rebounds.

Despite the setback, Colton has earned a place in the CIF State playoffs, commencing on Tuesday night.

Coach Keisha Young recognized the challenge posed by Adelanto’s size and expressed pride in the team’s effort, emphasizing their perseverance and determination throughout the game.

The game saw Adelanto taking an early lead with a 12-7 advantage, but Colton managed to rally and end the first quarter with a 17-15 lead. However, Adelanto’s strong second period, marked by a 16-4 run, allowed them to secure a 10-point lead at halftime.

The second half witnessed Adelanto furthering their lead, utilizing their size and length to convert paint touches into easy layups. Despite the loss, the Colton coaching staff expressed gratitude for the team’s performance and the support they received from the town.

Noteworthy performances from players on both teams included Nina Lacy leading Adelanto with 25 points and 23 rebounds, while Savannah Govea and Naomi Ontiveros stood out for Colton, with Govea contributing nine points and Ontiveros adding seven points.

In conclusion, despite the disappointment of the loss, the Colton girls’ basketball team has made significant strides this season, and their journey to the Division 5AA championship game will be remembered for their determination and resilience on the court.
