The girls’ varsity basketball team from East Aurora is making a significant statement against gender inequality in their game venues. While the boys’ team is scheduled to play their semifinals at Buffalo State University, the girls’ team, however, is slated to play in a high school gym. Co-captains Megan Cassidy and Jada Tresmond are unwilling to accept this discrepancy, and have taken proactive steps by initiating a petition requesting for the girls to play at Buffalo State or any college court for their semifinals.
In a remarkably brief period of time, the petition has garnered over 1,800 signatures, underscoring the resounding support for girls’ basketball in Western New York. “Don’t simply accept the status quo,” urges Cassidy. “If you notice something that is not right, if you recognize the need for change, advocate for that change.”
Cassidy and Tresmond’s appeal is not only about the current year’s team; it is about setting a precedent for future players. Tresmond emphasized that it would have been advantageous for the team to have the opportunity to play on a college court prior to the finals. “It would help us acclimate to the court quicker – all the advantages that the boys have, we lack,” she explained. “Playing at a high school versus a college is a very different experience, and I have never been to Buffalo State before…”
Gary Schutrum, the head coach of the girls’ basketball program, fully supports the petition, maintaining that if the team reaches the semifinals, they deserve to play in a fitting venue. The sense of accomplishment and support at a college venue adds tremendous value to their overall experience. “We have worked tirelessly for four months, and now we have the opportunity to play at a college venue,” he affirmed.
Tresmond, who is set to graduate this year, emphasized that the team holds utmost significance to her. She aspires to witness future players flourish and succeed with the changes they are advocating for. Coach Schutrum also praised the team’s leadership and unity, commending their exceptional character and resolve to advocate for their beliefs.
The petition signifies a significant stride towards advocating for equality in women’s sports, emphasizing the necessity of providing equal opportunities and resources to both male and female athletes. It stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of the East Aurora girls’ varsity basketball team, serving as a reminder that change is indeed possible when one is willing to voice their concerns and take decisive action.
