Bangor Christian Secures First State Title with Impressive Win in Class D Boys Basketball Championship

The Bangor Christian School boys basketball team encountered a slow start in the Class D final on Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless, once they found their rhythm, their momentum was unstoppable. The Warriors secured their inaugural state title in program history by defeating Valley with a score of 44-31 at the Augusta Civic Center.

The siblings Jalen and Rajon Reed were the key driving forces behind Bangor Christian’s triumph, totaling 32 points between them. Jalen Reed led the Patriots with 19 points, expressing his elation at being part of the first team to clinch a title and representing their school and the Lord. Rajon Reed also made a significant contribution with 13 points, guiding the team to their historic victory.

On the opposing side, Harry Louis led Valley with 15 points, while Fisher Tewksbury added eight points. Despite their efforts, Valley was unable to secure their eighth Gold Ball, concluding the game with a score of 17-5.

The victory was particularly poignant for the Patriots as it marked the first time they had bested the Cavaliers in a Class D final. Valley had emerged victorious against Bangor Christian in 2002 and 2003, making this win even more special for the Patriots.

The turning point of the game came in the third quarter when Bangor Christian outscored Valley 23-9, with the Reeds accounting for 16 of those points. Jalen Reed and Rajon Reed’s exceptional performance in the third quarter propelled the Patriots to their long-awaited state title.

While the first half of the game was sluggish, with Valley taking a 13-12 lead into halftime, Bangor Christian remained optimistic and returned with renewed energy in the second half. Coach Charlie Colson expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to make shots, ultimately turning the game in their favor.

The Patriots’ strong second half was characterized by impressive three-pointers and high-intensity defense. Elliot Straubel also made significant contributions, scoring seven points for the team in the crucial quarter.

Despite Valley’s efforts to stage a comeback in the fourth quarter, foul trouble hindered their progress, enabling Bangor Christian to maintain their lead and secure the win. Valley head coach Mike Staples acknowledged the tough battle and credited Bangor Christian for their exceptional performance.

In the end, Bangor Christian’s victory was the culmination of their unwavering determination and remarkable teamwork. The historic win will be remembered as a defining moment for the team and the school, marking their entry into the annals of Class D boys basketball history.
