Steve Mauro has been honoured with the esteemed title of Philadelphia Area District Tennis Coach of the Year for his outstanding leadership as head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Temple University during the 2023 spring and fall seasons. With a commendable track record of 19 years as a winning coach, Mauro has achieved an impressive men’s tennis overall record of 231-168-0 and a women’s tennis overall record of 190-118-0.
Mauro, alongside assistant coach Bruce Meyers, guided the men’s tennis team to an exceptional 19-5 record in the 2023 spring season, with Mauro personally reaching 200 wins. The team secured victories in 15 consecutive home matches, establishing the longest winning streak in the NCAA. Despite facing tough competition in the American Athletic Conference Championship, Mauro’s coaching propelled Temple to give the top seed a close fight, demonstrating their prowess as formidable opponents.
The women’s tennis team also experienced historic success under Mauro’s leadership, achieving an overall record of 17-5 and qualifying for both the American Athletic Conference and NCAA Championships. Mauro and his assistant coach, Frederika Girsang, played a pivotal role in guiding the women’s team to their remarkable achievements.
In addition to their success on the court, several Temple tennis players earned individual accolades. Doubles partners Leo Raquin and Thibault Frumholz ranked No. 9 in the ITA Atlantic Region with a 20-6 overall record, while Raquin also made a mark in singles action with a record-breaking season, finishing with a No. 8 ranking.
Furthermore, Maiko Uchijima and Jamie Wei represented Temple in the NCAA Championships, earning a national ranking of No. 8 in women’s tennis doubles after securing 29 wins. Uchijima was also named AAC Freshman of the Year for her outstanding performance throughout the season.
Mauro’s strategic planning also extended to the fall season, where Temple’s tennis teams excelled in invitationals and regional competitions. The duo of Maiko Uchijima and Samantha Nanere were invited to the ITA National Fall Championships and achieved a national doubles ranking of No. 20.
The spring season proved to be a continuation of Mauro’s success, with Temple’s women’s tennis team securing five consecutive wins. Mauro’s unwavering dedication and commitment to the development and success of his players have undoubtedly borne fruit in the form of numerous accolades and accomplishments.
