Women’s Tennis Team Dominates George Washington in Second Consecutive Win

The William & Mary women’s tennis team exhibited an impressive performance by achieving a 7-0 victory over George Washington, marking their second consecutive win at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The Tribe, holding a 6-5 record, successfully earned the doubles point and proceeded to sweep all the singles spots without dropping a set.

Commencing with a strong start, the Tribe secured the initial point of the match through victories at the Number 1 and Number 3 positions. Graduate student Yu Chen and junior Emma Fernald set the pace with a 6-4 win over Madison Lee and Victoria Sasinka at the top spot, marking their second consecutive victory and improving their record to 6-3 at No. 1.

Freshman Francesca Davis and sophomore Yaelle Vaissaud secured the doubles point by outlasting Solange Skeene and Alejandra Ramirez in a tiebreaker, with a score of 7-6 (2), on line three. The duo extended their winning streak to three matches and improved to 6-2 in dual-match action.

In the singles matches, juniors Ine Stange and Hedda Gurholt swiftly extended the Tribe’s lead to 3-0. Stange secured a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win over Lee at No. 4, while Gurholt won matching 6-3 sets to top Stella Wiesemann on line one. Stange’s win marked her third in a row, improving her overall record to 9-6. Gurholt, on the other hand, boosted her team-leading singles mark to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in dual-match play.

Graduate student Mila Mejic clinched the Tribe’s victory with a straight-set win at No. 3, dispatching Sasinka with scores of 6-3, 6-4, for her seventh win of the year.

Freshmen Francesca Davis and Yaelle Vaissaud further contributed to the Tribe’s success with victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Davis defeated Solange Skeene with a score of 6-4, 6-2, marking her 11th win of the year and improving to 7-2 in dual-match action. Vaissaud emerged victorious against Alejandra Ramirez, with scores of 6-3, 6-2, improving to 7-5 overall and 2-1 at No. 6.

The showdown culminated with Chen clinching a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Gabriela Giraldo, boosting her record to 11-7 overall and 5-1 at No. 2.

The Tribe anticipates their upcoming matches as they embark on a pair of CAA contests next week, facing UNCW on Thursday, March 14, at noon, and challenging Charleston on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m.
