Exploring the Welsh Wilderness: One Man’s 11-Year Adventure

Mr. Jason McGarrigle, a former rugby prop, has embarked on an remarkable 11-year journey to explore the stunning landscapes of Wales. Following his participation in a Three Peaks Challenge, Mr. McGarrigle developed a deep fondness for the outdoors and hiking, and has continued to pursue this passion with great dedication. His most recent achievement is the conquering of all the mountain classifications in Wales, and there are no indications that he will slow down.

Mr. McGarrigle embarked on his mission in 2013 with the goal of experiencing Wales from every possible perspective, and what better way to do so than from the summits of its mountains? Despite initial challenges and the use of steel cap work boots, Mr. McGarrigle remained resolute. Over the years, he has conquered every mountain in Wales, culminating with Craig Eigiau in February.

Looking back on his journey, Mr. McGarrigle acknowledges the physical and mental obstacles he encountered, especially during extreme weather conditions. Nevertheless, the stunning views and the sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile. Along the way, he has encountered ancient forests, deep bogs, caves, cliff scrambles, river crossings, and a variety of terrain and weather conditions. Throughout his adventure, Mr. McGarrigle has also been touched by the support and camaraderie of the communities in the remote villages of Wales.

Mr. McGarrigle’s journey holds a deeper significance, given that he was diagnosed with benign tumors near the pituitary gland at the age of 18. Despite medical advice to the contrary, Mr. McGarrigle pursued his passion for sports and eventually found solace and fulfillment in conquering the mountains of Wales. He attributes his success to the lessons learned from his health challenges, and expresses gratitude to Caerphilly Adventures & Caerphilly Adventures Group for equipping him with the skills to navigate challenging weather and terrain.

When asked about his favourite mountain, Mr. McGarrigle singles out Foel Hafod Fynydd, which offers an awe-inspiring view of the Arran Fawddwy range in Eryri National Park. As for what’s next, Mr. McGarrigle has set his sights on exploring the coastal path and Cambrian walks, demonstrating his unyielding determination to experience Wales from every perspective.
