The 46-year-old golfer, a former European Tour winner, clinched the title by a single stroke after making a crucial birdie on the 17th hole, capitalising on the late slip-up by Scotland’s Paul O’Hara. Thornton’s impressive win has reignited his presence on the DP World Tour, marking his return to the limelight after a hiatus.

Attached to the Spa Golf Club in County Down, Thornton’s triumph has opened the doors for a series of upcoming high-profile tournaments. He is set to showcase his skills at the Irish Open in Royal County Down and the DP World Tour’s flagship event at Wentworth, along with appearances at the Betfred British Masters and various Challenge Tour starts, solidifying his stature in the golfing realm.

Despite a challenging round, where only one participant managed to shoot under par, Thornton’s tenacity propelled him to the forefront, ultimately securing his well-deserved victory.

The thrilling contest saw O’Hara encounter a double-bogey-double finish, allowing Thornton to seize the lead. Although O’Hara briefly regained the advantage, Thornton’s resolute performance, including a pivotal birdie on the 17th, enabled him to clinch the title and the associated opportunities that come with it.

In addition to his triumph, O’Hara and third-placed Toby Hunt from Wales also secured automatic qualification for the 2024 PGA Cup, showcasing the depth of talent on display during the PGA Play-Offs.

O’Hara expressed his delight at the prospect of competing on the DP World Tour and Challenge Tour, underscoring the significance of these opportunities in furthering his career. His enthusiasm for the PGA Cup encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and competition that defines the sport, highlighting the upcoming year as an exciting chapter in his golfing journey.
