Celebrating Little Native Hockey League’s 50th Year of Bringing First Nation Communities Together

The Government of Canada is delighted to offer its congratulations to the Little Native Hockey League (LNHL) on the occasion of its 50th annual tournament, scheduled to take place during the March break in Ontario. Indigenous Services Canada is demonstrating its support by providing a grant of $100,000 to enable First Nation youth, families, and team members to participate in the week-long event. This substantial contribution is intended to uphold the tournament’s tradition of promoting sportsmanship, respect, and the spirit of unity within Indigenous communities.

Recognizing the essential role that cultural and recreational activities play in enriching the social fabric of First Nations communities, the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, has expressed gratitude for the tireless efforts of the organizers, coaches, parents, and volunteers who have dedicated their time to ensuring the success of the LNHL tournament. With approximately 3,500 athletes, in addition to their supporters and spectators, taking part in the event, the impact of the LNHL tournament on the youth and communities cannot be overstated.

The LNHL tournament, established by the late Earl Abotossaway, former Chief Jim McGregor, the late James D. Debassige, the late Reverend Leonard Self, and the late Norman Debassige, has continued to uphold its founding principles of education, citizenship, sportsmanship, and respect. Its mission remains focused on providing First Nation youth with the opportunity to compete, forge lasting friendships, and create enduring memories.

In line with these endeavours, the Government of Canada extends its best wishes to all the teams participating in the 2024 LNHL. The tournament serves as a testament to the spirit of unity and cooperation among Indigenous communities, and it is a significant platform for promoting physical activity, teamwork, and personal growth among First Nation youth.
