A participant in the Belarus national team at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics, Koltsov made significant strides in the sport throughout his career. His influence and skill were not only evident on the global stage, but also within esteemed clubs such as the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and Russian club Salavat Yulaev, with whom he secured the Russian Super League title in 2008. Following his playing days, Koltsov transitioned into coaching, making a lasting impact with Salavat Yulaev, where he was held in high regard by players, colleagues, and supporters.
The tragic news of his passing was relayed by his former club, Salavat Yulaev, who memorialized Koltsov as a resolute and jovial individual who left an enduring imprint on their legacy.
