Introducing the New Head Coach of the College of Charleston Men’s Basketball Team

The College of Charleston has appointed Chris Mack, former coach at Louisville, as the new head coach of their men’s basketball team. This decision follows the departure of their previous coach, Pat Kelsey, who recently joined the Cardinals. Matt Roberts, the athletic director, announced on Tuesday that Mack has agreed to a five-year contract to lead the program.

As part of the deal, Mack will receive an annual salary of £1.1 million until the 2028-29 season, with the potential for earning performance bonuses ranging from £150,000 for winning the NCAA Tournament to £5,000 for an NIT appearance. If Mack decides to leave his position within the first two seasons, he would owe the school £1.5 million, with the amount decreasing in subsequent years. Conversely, if the school were to dismiss him, they would owe Mack the entirety of what remains on the deal.

In addition to his salary, Mack has also received a £35,000 signing bonus for moving expenses and temporary lodging. With an impressive track record, including nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament during 12 full seasons as coach at Xavier and Louisville, Mack is eager to bring his passion and expertise to the College of Charleston.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Mack stated, “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be the next men’s basketball head coach at the College of Charleston. I’m more motivated than any coach in the country, and Cougar Nation is going to get my absolute best.”

Following Kelsey’s departure, the College of Charleston was in search of a leader who could continue their success on the court. Roberts emphasized the importance of finding a proven winner who aligns with their vision of championship basketball, and he believes that Mack is the perfect fit for the position. He stated, “Chris Mack will undoubtedly continue the high level of success that our students, alumni, donors and community deserve.”

Prior to his time at Louisville, Mack’s coaching career included a number of achievements, such as leading the team to a No. 1 ranking in the 2019-20 season, finishing with a record of 24-7. His teams at Xavier also reached four Sweet 16s and made an Elite Eight appearance in 2017, solidifying his reputation as a skilled and accomplished coach.

With the College of Charleston’s recent success in the NCAA Tournaments, including two consecutive appearances, the anticipation for Mack’s debut as head coach is high. Kelsey, Mack’s predecessor, expressed his excitement for the new era, and described Mack as a phenomenal coach and a great addition to the Charleston community.

As the College of Charleston prepares for a new chapter in their basketball program, there is optimism and eagerness for what Mack’s leadership will bring to the team. It is clear that Mack’s appointment as the new head coach has generated a sense of renewed energy and enthusiasm, and there are high hopes for the team’s future under his guidance.
