Rhenish Girls’ High School Dominates St Mary’s Hockey Festival

Rhenish Girls’ High School, hailing from the Western Cape, showcased their exceptional strength and skill at the St Mary’s Hockey Festival in Waverley. They demonstrated their dominance by securing victories in all four of their matches without conceding a single goal against formidable opponents.

The team commenced their day with a 2-0 win over Somerset College, who were recent champions of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament. They continued their winning streak with a narrow 1-0 triumph over St Andrew’s School for Girls, followed by a significant win against Oranje. Known for their solid defence, the Stellenbosch girls maintained a clean sheet and secured victory with a goal from Kaitlyn van Binsbergen.

In their final Pool C encounter, Rhenish claimed a resounding 4-0 victory over Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. Captain Leah du Plessis and her teammates displayed exceptional prowess on the field, showcasing their talent and determination.

However, not all teams had smooth performances. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School faced difficult losses on the opening day, while the hosts, St Mary’s Waverley, struggled with defeats by Menlopark and Durban Girls’ College.

The tournament results highlighted the resilience and tenacity of the participating teams. Standout performances included Hoërskool Menlopark’s 2-0 win over Windhoek High School, and Wykeham Collegiate’s victories against St Mary’s DSG (Pretoria) and Paarl Girls’ High School.

The St Mary’s Waverley Festival XI, Our Lady of Fatima DCS, and other participants demonstrated their athletic prowess and determination throughout the festival. The event proved to be a celebration of sportsmanship and talent.
