Exeter Chiefs Gear Up for European Showdown Against Bath Rugby

Exeter Chiefs’ Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter, has unveiled the selection for their upcoming clash with Bath Rugby in the Investec Champions Cup last 16 knockout round. The pivotal match is scheduled to take place at Sandy Park on Saturday, April 6.

Following a challenging defeat to Sale Sharks in their previous Gallagher Premiership fixture, the Chiefs are fully concentrated on the task at hand – progressing in the European campaign. With their sights firmly fixed on this critical showdown, Baxter has assembled a formidable team to take on their rivals from Bath.

The experienced Jack Yeandle will lead the front row as he is poised to make his 50th appearance in the Champions Cup. He will be supported by Scott Sio at loosehead and Ehren Painter at tighthead. In the boiler room, Rusi Tuima will make his return to the matchday line-up alongside Dafydd Jenkins, while the back row will feature the debut of Ethan Roots, who recently represented England in the Guinness Six Nations, along with Christ Tshiunza and Ross Vintcent.

The Chiefs’ backline will see the combination of Tom Cairns and Harvey Skinner at scrum half and fly half, respectively, as well as a powerful pairing in the centres with Henry Slade and Ollie Devoto. The back three will consist of Josh Hodge at fullback, flanked by Olly Woodburn and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso on the wings.

Baxter has emphasized the team’s singular focus on the forthcoming challenge and their ability to move past the setback of the previous weekend. He has acknowledged Bath’s commendable performance this season and anticipates a formidable challenge, but is also optimistic about the home advantage and the potential impact of a capacity crowd in driving a spirited performance from the team.

The Chiefs’ bench comprises players prepared to make a significant impact, with Jack Innard, Danny Southworth, and Marcus Street providing cover for the front row, while Lewis Pearson and Greg Fisilau will be available to bolster the second and back rows. Stu Townsend, Will Haydon-Wood, and Zack Wimbush are also poised to contribute from the bench.

As the Chiefs gear up for this pivotal European showdown, expectations are high for an enthralling and hard-fought match as they aim to secure a victory against their formidable opponents from Bath.
