As we approach the conclusion of another exciting rugby season in the South-West, we have taken the opportunity to compile the ultimate rugby team comprised of exceptional SW talent. Our sole criterion for selection is that the players must have a strong heritage in the South-West – and we can confidently assert that we were presented with an abundance of talent in the region.
Commencing with the formidable forward pack, at the forefront of the front row stands the exceptional Arthur Leyland Harrison, originating from Torquay, who achieved the distinction of being the only England rugby international to have been awarded the Victoria Cross – a testament to his gallantry in the British Armed Forces.
Subsequently, we have the crucial position of hooker, occupied by none other than Luke Cowan-Dickie, hailing from Truro. His renowned opening try against Racing 92 in the European Champions Cup of 2020 solidified his status as a formidable force in the front row.
The final member of the front row is Phil Vickery, affectionately identified as the ‘Raging Bull’, representing Barnstaple. His illustrious career encompassed 73 caps for England and participation in the 2003 and 2007 World Cup Finals.
Transitioning to the second row, we have the esteemed Robert Dibble, born in Bridgwater, and Luke Charteris, born in Camborne. Both players have left an indelible impression on the game both regionally and internationally.
Occupying the flanker positions, we have the dynamic pairing of Sam Simmonds from Torquay and Joe Launchbury from Exmouth, both of whom have significantly contributed to the game, justifying their inclusion in our elite team.
Concluding our formidable forward pack is the legendary Richard Baxter, born in Exeter, who amassed an astounding 431 appearances for Exeter Chiefs.
Moving on to the backs department, the scrum-half position is attributed to Richard Nancekivell from Launceston RFC, who scored two of the most iconic tries in the history of Cornish rugby, thus rightfully earning his place in our team.
At fly-half, we have the talented Billy Burns, representing Ireland, who advanced into the first team at Gloucester before transitioning to Ulster.
Occupying the wing positions, we have the iconic Jeremy Guscott, an extraordinary player from Bath, and Jack Nowell, another exceptional talent born in Truro.
In the centre positions, we feature the stellar Henry Slade, a legendary figure for Exeter Chiefs from Plymouth, and the remarkable Bert Solomon, acclaimed as the finest rugby player to emerge from Cornwall.
To conclude our remarkable line-up, we include the exceptional Matt Perry, born in Bath, who dedicated a decade to the club, amassing an impressive 561 points and representing England on 36 occasions.
Guiding this exceptional team of SW greats is the talented Rob Baxter, born in Tavistock and currently serving as the Director of Rugby for the Chiefs.
