Gustavus Men’s Tennis Team Clinches Victory Against Saint John’s and Falls to No. 6 U Chicago

The Gustavus men’s tennis team recently embarked on a noteworthy road trip, with one team securing a victory against Saint John’s and the other team encountering a challenging defeat against No. 6 U Chicago. The Gustavus team exhibited their competitive spirit and skill on the court, marking a commendable display of athleticism.

During their match against Saint John’s, the Gusties showcased their dominance by achieving a clean sweep with a resounding 9-0 victory. Doubles pairs Oscar Wikström and Geoffrey Youngs, as well as Ali Derbani and Odin Fouchier, delivered exceptional performances to secure their wins with scores of 8-2. In addition, Luke Fridinger and Taona Mhwandagara claimed victory with a score of 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Subsequently, the Gustavus team continued their winning streak in singles matches, with outstanding performances from Derbani, Mhwandagara, Fridinger, Youngs, Wikström, and Fouchier.

In a separate match against No. 6 U Chicago, the Gustavus team encountered a formidable opponent and unfortunately fell short with a 2-7 defeat. Despite the challenging outcome, Caleb Fridinger and Dominik Knutson managed to secure the only doubles point for Gustavus with a commendable win at No. 3. Furthermore, Josh Christensen demonstrated an impressive performance by winning at No. 2 in a tough match against a highly-ranked opponent.

The Gusties, who currently hold a 15-7 overall record and remain undefeated at 5-0 in the MIAC, are making preparations for another set of matches. In their upcoming schedule, the team will be competing against Hamline and hosting Augustana (S.D.) in Saint Peter.
