Renowned English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has been in the spotlight this week at Augusta, following the revelation of an unconventional addition to his support team – a top baseball coach. After meeting Andrew Lysy six months ago, Fitzpatrick was so impressed by his methods that he promptly enlisted him to his backroom team. Lysy now accompanies Fitzpatrick to every tournament, with the aim of securing another victory to add to his 2022 US Open win.
Fitzpatrick shared, “It all began when I mentioned to some friends that I had purchased a property in Florida to serve as a base for my PGA Tour schedule. One of them recommended that I visit the Cressey Sports Performance headquarters, conveniently located just across the road. I followed their advice and was thoroughly impressed by the impact that Andrew had on me.”
The golfer went on to explain, “I had been dealing with a neck issue for most of last year. While it was not career-threatening, it was troublesome enough to cost me a few shots here and there, which can truly make a difference at this level. I’ve never felt better. My neck is significantly better than last year, and it has made a substantial impact on how I can practice, how forcefully I can swing, and the exercises I can perform in the gym. It has made a remarkable difference compared to last year.”
Lysy, a highly qualified strength and conditioning coach renowned for his work with top baseball players, expressed his surprise at the similarities between the swing of a baseball batter and a golfer. He shared, “It’s all about good rotation and strengthening the muscles that endure the most strain. Whilst it may be unexpected, hitters often experience neck problems, usually from evading fast balls directed at the body. I have noticed a significant improvement in Matt’s mobility and his ability to propel himself into the moment of impact. It has been quite eye-opening for me, and I am relishing the change of scenery.”
In the midst of his preparations for the Masters, Fitzpatrick conveyed his excitement, stating, “It has never lost the wow factor that it had for me as a 19-year-old. Perhaps that is why my results have not been as good as I believe they should have been. This has bolstered my optimism, especially now that I feel much better physically. I am anticipating a significant week ahead.”
With Andrew Lysy by his side, Matt Fitzpatrick is primed and prepared for the challenge at Augusta, armed with a new perspective and enhanced physical well-being. As the golfing world eagerly anticipates the Masters, one thing is certain – Fitzpatrick is undeniably an athlete to keep an eye on.
