From Flying Spitfires to Becoming the Oldest Tennis Player: The Incredible Journey of Henry Young

Retirement is the time to enjoy life, and that’s exactly what Australian Henry Young is doing. At 100 years old, he is the oldest competing tennis player in the world, currently participating in the 2023 ITF Masters World Individual Championships in Capdepera, Mallorca.

Henry, a former Spitfire pilot and soldier-settler farmer, has led an extraordinary life. Born in Glenelg near Adelaide, he enlisted in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy at the age of 19. He served with both the British and Australian navies during and after World War II. After the war, he pursued his dream of becoming a farmer.

Henry’s love for sports has always kept him active. He played tennis and squash during his time in the forces and even took up skiing. Now, at 100 years old, he still plays tennis three times a week at his club in Adelaide. He believes that staying active is essential, even in old age.

Despite facing various health challenges, including two new knees, new hips, a pacemaker, hearing aids, and two new noses (due to his years on the flight decks), Henry continues to play and enjoy tennis. He plans to keep playing until he starts embarrassing his doubles partners.

Henry’s dedication to tennis has earned him recognition. He played in The Clash of the Centurions at the Australian Open in Melbourne when he was 99 years old. Walking through the tunnel, surrounded by portraits of the greatest players, and stepping out into the arena with 15,000 people applauding was a moment he will never forget. He even had the opportunity to meet Rafa Nadal.

Henry’s appearance at the World Championships at the age of 100 is a testament to the lifelong competitiveness of tennis. It also supports research that shows the health benefits of racket sports, particularly tennis, and their ability to extend life expectancy.

Henry’s incredible journey serves as an inspiration to people of all ages. He believes in working hard, seizing opportunities, and giving it your all. He encourages young people to have determination and strive to be better than the average person. According to Henry, if you work hard and enjoy life to the fullest, the rewards will come.

So, let’s take a page out of Henry Young’s book and make the most of our retirement. Let’s stay active, pursue our passions, and embrace all the opportunities life has to offer. After all, as they say in Australia, ‘give it a fair go’!
