Macalester Women’s Tennis Team Triumphs Over Saint Mary’s in a Stellar 8-1 Victory

The women’s tennis team of Macalester College delivered an outstanding performance in their inaugural match at Hayden Courts, achieving a resounding 8-1 victory over the Cardinals of Saint Mary’s. This notable triumph has propelled the Scots to an impressive season record of 8-3, with a MIAC record of 3-1.

Senior Sydney Ellison from Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park, exhibited exceptional prowess by securing the first singles match. She decisively claimed the first set with a 6-0 victory, and despite a closely contested second set, emerged as the victor with a score of 7-6 (7-1), earning a pivotal point for her team. Fellow seniors Amanye Reynolds and Meg Ulrich also delivered stellar performances, triumphing at second and third singles with scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.

Sophomore Elizabeth Trevathan and Savannah Haugen displayed unwavering skill and determination by emerging victorious at fourth and fifth singles, securing points with impressive scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2. Although the Cardinals managed to secure a point at sixth singles, it was insufficient to diminish the spirit of the Macalester team.

The doubles matches further showcased the team’s strong chemistry and coordination, with Ellison and Ulrich teaming up at No. 1 doubles to clinch a well-earned 8-4 victory. Reynolds and Haugen continued the winning streak at second doubles, narrowly edging out their opponents with a score of 8-6. The third doubles point was secured by Trevathan and junior Megan Twomey, who demonstrated their prowess with an 8-5 win.

Looking ahead, Macalester’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, where they will face Carleton for another MIAC contest at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The highly anticipated match is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
