The junior varsity ice hockey team from Rockville Centre, East Rockaway, and Hewlett captured the Nassau Country championship in March, marking a significant accomplishment just two years after the team’s establishment. Lauren Sobel, the team’s general manager from Hewlett, attributed their success to exceptional teamwork and solidarity among the players. The team’s journey began in the 2022-2023 season, where they faced challenges and secured only two victories. Subsequently, the three communities decided to merge and form a unified team following the dissolution of the Lynbrook/Hewlett-Woodmere/East Rockaway team.
In the current season, the players commenced their campaign in late November and delivered an impressive performance, clinching 10 wins, five losses, and three ties in the High School Hockey League of Nassau County. The playoffs began at the end of February, leading to an intense showdown.
Despite the difficulties in coordinating schedules and practices due to some team members participating in other travel hockey leagues, the team’s cohesion improved significantly as the season progressed, resulting in a winning streak by the beginning of January. Lauren noted that the team had not lost a game in 2024, demonstrating their determination and skill.
The playoffs provided a true test of the team’s capabilities, as they defeated Oceanside on March 8, followed by a victory against Great Neck in the semifinals on March 10. The ultimate challenge came on March 12, in a face-off against the nearly undefeated Plainview-Old Bethpage, where the Rockville Centre/East Rockaway/Hewlett team emerged victorious, securing the championship.
For proud parents like Lauren, witnessing the team’s determination and victory was truly heartwarming. The unexpected triumph against formidable opponents added to their sense of pride and joy.
Goalie Matthew Prezioso of Rockville Centre, with a decade of hockey experience, expressed his disbelief at the team’s astounding success, especially considering their initial projected performance at the beginning of the season. Ninth grader Nathan Sobel, a freshman forward on the team, also reflected on the journey, acknowledging the team’s remarkable comeback from a challenging 2022-2023 season with a 2-15 record.
Tim McManus of Rockville Centre, the team’s coach, commended the players for their resilience and determination. Despite initial skepticism about the team’s potential, McManus was pleasantly surprised by their progress and dedication. By emphasizing the importance of strong defense and teamwork, McManus motivated and guided the players to surpass all expectations, leading to their championship victory.
The story of the Rockville Centre/East Rockaway/Hewlett junior varsity ice hockey team serves as a testament to the power of determination, teamwork, and perseverance. As they celebrate their well-deserved championship, their victory will undoubtedly inspire aspiring young athletes and bring pride to their local communities.
