The UConn women’s tennis team achieved a commanding 7-0 victory against Seton Hall on Friday for their annual Senior Day, following a previous win against Villanova. The team honoured seniors Varsha Rathore and Nansi Toskova before entering the competition.
In the singles competitions, junior Olivia Wright set the pace by securing a dominant win against Seton Hall’s Anastasia Sereda in two straight sets. The rest of the team followed suit, with most of the players clinching victories in two straight sets, securing all six of the singles points. Isabella Asenov’s impressive performance in the sixth singles position sealed the deal for the Huskies, winning her sets 6-2, 7-5.
Moving on to the doubles competition, the pairs of Wright and junior Maria Constantinou, as well as junior Isabel Petri Bere and freshman Caroline Hinshaw, both triumphed over their opponents with a 6-1 win, securing the doubles point for the team.
At the conclusion of the match, the Huskies emerged victorious with a final score of 7-0, capping off a successful season with a 12-7 record, marking one of the best recent records in the UConn Women’s Tennis program history, and finishing 4-3 in Big East play.
Coach Glenn Marshall commended the team’s stellar performance, particularly highlighting their strong doubles play and the impressive starts in the singles matches. “It was a great day all around, and we got the chance to celebrate our two wonderful seniors, Nansi and Varsha,” he remarked.
Following the wins against Seton Hall and Villanova, the Huskies are now gearing up for the postseason, with the first round of the Big East Championships scheduled for Thursday, April 18. While facing tough matchups from each Big East program, the team enters the postseason with confidence, buoyed by their recent victories.
