Shaolin Kung Fu Comes to Barrie: Master Richard Yang Opens New Academy

Renowned master of traditional martial arts, Richard Yang, has recently relocated from Beijing to Barrie with the intention of establishing the esteemed Wisdom Kungfu Academy in the northern region of the city. With a wealth of experience spanning over two decades in the realm of martial arts, combined with a background in adolescent psychology, Yang is keen to impart his knowledge and expertise to the residents of Barrie.

Yang’s initiation into the world of martial arts commenced at the age of 13, when his mother sent him to the Shaolin Temple in the pursuit of increased height. Although his vertical stature remained unchanged, Yang discovered an unwavering passion for martial arts and dedicated himself to rigorous training, ultimately achieving the status of national champion in traditional martial arts. His unwavering commitment led to a five-year tenure of intensive training at the Shaolin Temple, followed by the acquisition of a bachelor’s degree from the Martial Arts College of Beijing Sport University and a master’s degree in sports training from Capital University of Physical Education and Sports.

Over the past decade, Yang has been dedicated to instructing martial arts in Beijing for both children and adults. Inspired by the encouragement of the parents of a former international student, he was prompted to relocate to Barrie, where he proceeded to establish the Wisdom Kung Fu Academy.

The Academy, situated at 20 Bell Farm Rd., is poised to welcome new students subsequent to an official grand opening ceremony scheduled for April 20, from 2-4 p.m. Spanning an area of 1,800 square feet, the facility will offer an array of classes encompassing various disciplines, such as kung fu, tai chi, and kickboxing, designed to accommodate individuals of all age groups.

According to Yang, kung fu boasts a multitude of benefits for children, augmenting their physical strength and equilibrium. Conversely, kickboxing and tai chi serve as constructive methods for adolescents and adults to channel their energy and manage stress. Yang’s instructional approach aims to instill self-motivation, confidence, and proficiency in his students, emphasizing the significance of setting and attaining personal milestones.

In addition to his expertise in martial arts, Yang possesses a profound understanding of adolescent psychology, equipping him with the capabilities to effectively mentor and guide his students. By setting a positive example and advocating the value of self-discipline and strong “chi” or energy, Yang aspires to inspire his students to integrate the principles learned in class into their daily lives.

His comprehensive approach to martial arts instruction not only showcases his proficiency in traditional techniques but also underscores his comprehension of the personal growth it can cultivate. With a focal point on confidence augmentation and effective stress management, the Wisdom Kung Fu Academy, under Yang’s auspices, is primed to present the residents of Barrie with an unparalleled opportunity for learning and personal development through the practice of Shaolin Kung Fu.
