Exploring the Discipline and Art of Shotokan Ohshima Karate-do and Self-Defense

Unveiling the art of karate: An exploration of discipline, tradition, and self-improvement

The Shotokan Ohshima Karate-do and Self-Defense is not an ordinary martial arts school, but rather a place where traditional karate-do is taught as a serious art and a way of life that aims to cultivate and refine character. The club is led by Altman Senpai, who encourages students to challenge themselves and practice mindfulness, promoting self-awareness and conscientiousness in all aspects of life.

Central to our practice is the rigorous training that challenges the mind to be disciplined and focused. Karate, as an art form, provides comprehensive mental and physical exercise, with the main challenge lying in training the mind to be disciplined and focused. It emphasizes that laziness is the easiest option and that true strength lies in discipline and focus.

The art of Shotokan Ohshima Karate-do focuses on self-defence techniques that utilize the entire body to its maximum advantage. These techniques are divided into three main aspects: Kihon, which involves fundamental blocks, punches, kicks, and stances; Kata, pre-arranged forms simulating combat situations; and Kumite, which involves sparring. The progression of our students is marked by their mastery of these fundamental techniques, leading to the development of greater physical and mental stamina.

Karate as self-defence is described as one of the most dynamic of all martial arts, as it allows the trained karate student to coordinate the mind and body perfectly, unleashing tremendous physical power at will. It reveals that it is not mere physical strength that makes a strong karateka, but the ability to coordinate the mind and body seamlessly.

The benefits of karate extend beyond physical exercise, promoting mental and emotional well-being. Regular practice of karate tones the body, enhances coordination, improves reflexes, and builds stamina. Moreover, the serious practice of karate leads to the development of composure, clearer thought processes, deeper insight into mental capabilities, and heightened self-confidence. In essence, karate is regarded as a means to an end, encouraging proficiency and the harmonious coordination of mind and body, regardless of age.

The club cordially welcomes all interested individuals to their training sessions, which take place at the Brace Lab, Room 105, 510 Stadium Drive, Lincoln NE 68588.
