Rugby enthusiasts who only casually follow the Six Nations tournament may not be aware of the various cups and trophies that have been introduced over the years to add more competitive fervour to the matches. While most are familiar with the championship trophy and the Triple Crown, the well-recognized Calcutta Cup has been the oldest international rugby trophy contested since 1879.
In addition to these, several other trophies have made their mark in the tournament, such as the Millennium Trophy (England v Ireland), Centenary Quaich (Ireland v Scotland), Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy (France v Italy), Auld Alliance Trophy (France v Scotland), Doddie Weir Cup (Scotland v Wales), and Cuttitta Cup (Italy v Scotland). Furthermore, there have been discussions about Italy and Wales potentially introducing a trophy for their annual match as well.
While the men’s tournament has seen a steady introduction of new silverware, the women’s championship is yet to partake in this tradition, with only the champions being awarded any recognition. However, there is the question of whether existing men’s trophies should be replicated for women, as it is doubtful if a “Women’s Calcutta Cup,” for instance, would hold the same gravitas as the men’s historic fixture. With the evolution of the Women’s Six Nations, the opportunity to celebrate past and present trailblazers of the sport with the introduction of silverware is being deliberated.
Marlie Packer, the captain of the England team, advocates for recognition of legends who have contributed significantly to the women’s game. She expressed her support for the creation of cups and trophies to honour these individuals, stating, “It’s about evolving the game and evolving the tournament with different trophies.”
Here are our suggestions for silverware that could be introduced to the Women’s Six Nations:
The Emily Valentine Cup – Ireland v Wales
A trophy to honour Valentine, a 10-year-old schoolgirl who played for a boys’ team at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, Ireland. Her journals are the earliest known record of a girl playing rugby at any level.
The Paula George Trophy – England v Wales
In honour of former England captain Paula George, who played a pivotal role in English women’s rugby in the Nineties and Noughties.
The Nathalie Amiel Cup – France v Scotland
To celebrate the remarkable career of Nathalie Amiel, who made her debut for France against Great Britain at just 15 years old.
The Jim Greenwood Trophy – England v Scotland
Dedicated to Jim Greenwood, a former Scottish player who was instrumental in the development of women’s rugby.
The 1991 Cup – England v France
A tribute to the four pioneering women who organized the first Women’s Rugby World Cup in 1991.
The Sara Barattin Shield – Italy v France
An accolade for Sara Barattin, the first Italian women’s player to reach 100 Test appearances.
The introduction of other trophies in the Women’s Six Nations aims to recognise the invaluable contributions of players, pioneers, and figures who have shaped and pushed the boundaries of women’s rugby. As fans eagerly await the coming season, it would be fascinating to hear their suggestions for which legends to honour and the trophies that should be instituted in the tournament.
