UTRGV Women’s Golf Team in 11th Place After First Day of WAC Championship

The UTRGV Vaqueros women’s golf team commenced its participation in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship with a commendable performance, securing the 11th position following the first day of competition at The Rim Golf Club at Chapparal Pines.

The team initiated proceedings with a first-round team score of 334, placing them 12 strokes adrift of Southern Utah in 10th place. Senior Mercedes Vega and freshman Preston Saiz led the charge for the Vaqueros, both registering opening rounds of 80 and currently sharing the 37th position. Freshmen Natalia Rodriguez and Camila Herrera closely follow, jointly holding the 52nd spot after posting an opening round score of 87, while junior Catherine Flores occupies the 54th position with an opening round of 89.

Abilene Christian currently commands the lead after the initial day, boasting an impressive first-round score of 298. Furthermore, Abilene Christian’s Ryann Honea leads the individual standings with an opening round one-under par 70.

The Vaqueros are poised to continue their pursuit for victory as they return to the course for round two on Saturday, with the first groups teeing off at 11 a.m. The team is resolute in their ambition to make an impact and ascend the ranks as the championship unfolds.
