The recent assembly of the Trenton Rotary Club was a captivating affair, as members were regaled with an enlightening program detailing the triumphs of the basketball program at North Central Missouri College (NCMC). The convocation, held on April 25 at the BTC Bank community room, was overseen by Jackie Soptic, with Joe McDonald serving as the sergeant at arms, and Dan Wilford leading the prayer.

The focal point of the gathering was the presentation by the program chairman, Doug Tye, who introduced the esteemed coaches of the women’s and men’s basketball teams – Jenni Croy and Jeremy Esry, respectively. Both coaches imparted invaluable insights into the accomplishments and future plans of their respective basketball programs.

Coach Croy, who celebrated her 300th win and recently concluded her 17th year at NCMC, took the opportunity to expound upon the successes of the women’s team. The team concluded the season with a commendable 25-8 record, triumphing over two Top 10 teams. They also qualified for the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the third consecutive year and attained a 1-2 record in the competition. Coach Croy proudly announced the feats of four graduating sophomores, as well as the return of seven players and the addition of four new players for the upcoming season. She also mentioned ongoing recruitment efforts, specifically emphasizing the need for a post player.

Similarly, Coach Esry, who has completed his 11th year at NCMC and his eighth as head coach, showcased the achievements of the men’s team. The team equaled the school record with an impressive 27-8 season and successfully reached the Elite 8 in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Two of the team’s players, Tyler King and Isaiah Reames, were recognized as All-Americans, with Reames committing to Truman State University. Coach Esry confirmed the graduation of six players and the return of six, with the signing of two new players and ongoing negotiations with potential recruits.

Both coaches extolled the unwavering support of the community for their teams, with Coach Esry emphasizing the lasting impact of these bonds on past players. Additionally, they underscored the formation of a Booster Club dedicated to supporting all athletic teams at NCMC, which has been actively involved throughout the year. It was also mentioned that the players actively engage in community volunteer work as a way of reciprocating the support they have received.

The meeting also encompassed a discourse by Mrs. Soptic on Rotary District 6040’s significant contributions to Rotary International’s Polio Plus program, underscored by the Trenton Club’s involvement in the district.

Looking ahead, the upcoming May 2 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club promises to be equally engaging, with a presentation by the Trenton High School spring sports coaches, led by program chairman Daniel Gott.
