Learning to Play Tennis Like Zendaya in ‘Challengers’

For those who have viewed the film ‘Challengers’ and been motivated to take up the sport of tennis, you are not alone. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a press event where I was able to engage in the excitement of playing tennis, similar to the characters in the film. The event, hosted by MGM and Court 16, took place at the Brooklyn Alamo Drafthouse, where we viewed ‘Challengers’ before engaging in a comprehensive four-court training circuit.

As someone with a background in softball, I quickly realised that tennis necessitates an entirely different set of muscle groups. However, despite initial difficulties, the experience was invigorating. There is something about learning to strike a ball while the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score played in the background that evoked a sense of professionalism.

The training began with fundamental techniques, instructing us on the execution of backhand and forehand strokes. We then progressed to footwork, rallying, and ultimately, one-on-one matches with our fellow participants. While I may not have excelled as the star player, the experience left me feeling inspired, igniting a desire to explore the potential of becoming adept at tennis through further practice.

The most notable aspect of the event was the seamless shift from watching the film to actively participating in the sport. The infectious energy emitted by ‘Challengers’ is undeniably compelling, prompting an irresistible inclination to engage in physical activity. Court 16 effectively imparted fundamental skills, and while I may not be prepared to take the lead in my own tennis film, I can certainly recognise how it complemented the overall experience of viewing the movie.

For those who relish the concept of fully immersing oneself in a sport following its portrayal on the big screen, ‘Challengers’ is an absolute must-see. The film’s energy and exhilaration will undoubtedly prompt a desire to venture out and experiment with the game of tennis. Who knows, you may just uncover a new passion for the sport.

Therefore, if you are motivated to wield a tennis racket after watching ‘Challengers’, do not hesitate to give it a try. The film is presently being screened in theatres, affording you the opportunity to experience the excitement firsthand.
