Alabama’s Newest Addition: Labaron Philon Commits to the Crimson Tide

Alabama basketball has recently secured an exciting commitment from highly-regarded four-star point guard, Labaron Philon. The Alabama native, hailing from Mobile, has enjoyed a remarkable high school career, being named Mr. Basketball in 2023 and earning the Class 7A Player of the Year honours twice, with an impressive 2,334 career points to his name.

Following a successful senior year at the prestigious Link Academy in Missouri, Philon led the program to a top-10 national ranking and a semifinal appearance at the Chipotle Nationals. His performance in the EYBL scholastic circuit, where he averaged 11.7 points and 4.3 assists in 12 games for Team Thad, further solidified his position as a top-tier prospect.

Having previously committed to Kansas, Philon opted to request a release from his letter of intent following several transfer portal additions to the Jayhawks’ roster. This decision paved the way for Alabama to secure his commitment, positioning him as a top priority for coach Nate Oats and his staff.

The addition of Philon brings depth and talent to Alabama’s backcourt, complementing new recruits Aden Holloway, Houston Mallette, and Chris Youngblood, as well as returning players Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and potentially Mark Sears. With Philon’s commitment, Alabama’s scholarship count now stands at 12.

In their efforts to further strengthen their roster, Alabama is also actively pursuing priority target Clifford Omoruyi, a centre from Rutgers. As a result, their recruiting class currently ranks second in the nation, serving as a testament to the program’s upward trajectory under Coach Oats.

What can Alabama anticipate from Philon? Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 170 pounds, he is renowned for his dynamic style of play, excelling at attacking the basket and finishing in the paint. Although previously considered a marginal 3-point shooter, his impressive 44 percent shooting on the EYBL circuit last summer indicates potential for growth in that area.

Under Coach Oats’ guidance, Philon will have the opportunity to thrive in Alabama’s up-tempo style of play, showcasing his abilities in transition and his scoring aptitude. Furthermore, his defensive prowess, averaging over two steals per game in high school, will be a valuable asset to the team.

Philon’s commitment also underscores Alabama’s increasing appeal to top high school talents, as the program continues to attract highly-regarded prospects. The synergy and chemistry between Philon and his new teammates from the 2024 class bodes well for the team’s future success.

With the impending decision from forward Grant Nelson and the NBA Draft participant deadline fast approaching, the Crimson Tide is navigating an eventful off-season. However, the addition of Philon and the overall strength of Alabama’s recruiting class serve as promising indicators of the program’s continued ascent in the college basketball landscape.
