The regular season for the Wesleyan tennis team concluded with a split against Fairmont State University, with the men’s team emerging victorious with a 4-3 win, while the women’s team fell short with a 5-2 loss against the Falcons on Saturday.
The Wesleyan men, ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Region, faced a tough challenge against the No. 4-ranked Fairmont State men’s team. The matches were closely contested, but the Bobcats managed to secure the win with a final score of 4-3. On the other hand, the Wesleyan women, ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region, struggled to keep up with the No. 7-ranked Fairmont State women’s team, resulting in a 5-2 loss.
Despite the outcome, both teams are gearing up to compete in the upcoming Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament.
In the men’s singles matches, Kihiro Karasawa put up a strong fight but eventually lost to Elia Barozzi with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 3-6. Gianluca Gerndt also gave it his all but fell short against Kan Watanabe with a score of 3-6, 2-6. However, Takuya Kobayashi emerged victorious, defeating Alexandre Pages with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Mika Kreisel also secured a win by triumphing over Seena Saadevandi with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Ricardo Starosta continued the winning streak by defeating Hugo Massoni with a score of 7-6, 6-4. Jed Platts, unfortunately, lost his match with a score of 2-6, 1-6. In the doubles matches, the Wesleyan men managed to win two out of the three matches, securing their overall victory against Fairmont State.
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles matches, the Wesleyan women faced tough competition from the Fairmont State team. Dominique Jansen put up a valiant effort but ultimately lost to Maria Fonseca with a score of 4-6, 5-7. Omolade Aderemi’s match against Hope Backx was fiercely contested, but she fell short with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Sneha Sundaraneedi fought hard and managed to defeat Jada Mae Okoye with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Hailey Banda faced a tough battle against Laura Maciel and eventually lost with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-7. Cayley Symons and Emily Lybarger also faced tough opponents and unfortunately lost their matches. In the doubles matches, the Wesleyan women were unable to secure a victory, resulting in an overall loss against Fairmont State.
As the regular season draws to a close, the focus now shifts to the upcoming MEC Tournament, where both the Wesleyan men’s and women’s teams will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at the conference level.
