New Name, Same Game: Atlantic Hockey America Unites Mercyhurst and Other College Hockey Teams

The upcoming autumn term at Mercyhurst University is set to bring about significant changes. However, it is important to note that the Lakers will continue to compete at the NCAA Division I level. The difference will be the name of their conference.

Both the men’s and women’s hockey programs at Mercyhurst will now fall under the shared banner of the Atlantic Hockey America. This decision was made by the officials governing each conference and will come into effect for the 2024-25 college hockey season.

In a news release, AHA commissioner Michelle Morgan expressed her enthusiasm for the change, stating, “Our new identity honors the rich tradition of our past and celebrates the bright future that lies ahead for our member programs.”

Mercyhurst’s men’s team, under the leadership of coach Rick Gotkin, has been part of the Atlantic Hockey Association for 22 years. The women’s team, on the other hand, has been competing in the College Hockey America conference for 23 years.

Looking ahead, the conference is expected to expand to seven teams with the addition of the University of Delaware next year, bringing even more excitement to the mix.

These changes are poised to revitalize the college hockey scene and foster a sense of unity among the respective programs. Despite the change in name, the passion and commitment of both the men’s and women’s teams at Mercyhurst University remain unwavering.

As the 2024-25 college hockey season approaches, the Mercyhurst Lakers and the other teams under the Atlantic Hockey America banner are preparing for an exciting new chapter in their storied history. The unification of the conferences represents a fresh start and a new era for college hockey, and the teams are eager to showcase their skills and uphold the tradition of excellence on the ice.

Undoubtedly, the decision to unite under the Atlantic Hockey America banner signifies a significant milestone for the college hockey community and promises to bring about positive and impactful change. With the support of fans and the dedication of the teams, the future of college hockey looks brighter than ever.
