Horsham Native, Nominated for NHL Hero Award, Advocates for Blind Hockey

Kelsey McGuire, a resident of Horsham and the founder of Philadelphia Blind Hockey, has been recognised as one of the three finalists from the United States for the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award by the NHL. This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who have had a positive impact on their communities, culture, or society through their involvement in the sport of hockey. McGuire, who also serves as the Executive Director of Philadelphia Blind Hockey, considers it a great honour to be a contender for this award.
A graduate of Kutztown University with a degree in special education for visual impairments, McGuire currently teaches at the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia. Three years ago, McGuire’s school collaborated with the Flyers to introduce students to the sport of hockey, culminating in the establishment of Philadelphia Blind Hockey, which is now entering its second season. This initiative provides children ages 6 to 13 with the opportunity to participate in hockey at no cost.
The Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award recognises individuals who have made a significant positive impact on their communities. McGuire is deeply honoured to be acknowledged for her dedicated work on this innovative program. The Philadelphia Inquirer has highlighted how McGuire’s efforts have increased the visibility and accessibility of hockey for individuals with visual impairments. As one of the three finalists from the United States, McGuire’s commitment and dedication have not gone unnoticed.
In addition to the three American finalists, three nominees were also selected from Canada. After a thorough review by a committee, the ultimate recipient will be revealed at the NHL Awards event. McGuire’s nomination for the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award is a tremendous validation of her efforts, which have not only expanded access to hockey for individuals with visual impairments but also fostered a sense of community and inclusivity. We eagerly anticipate the future of this exemplary program.
The impact of sports on society is truly remarkable. McGuire’s work serves as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the meaningful difference that one person’s commitment can make. Her unwavering dedication continues to positively influence the lives of many, and it is heartening to see her remarkable journey being acknowledged.
