Proposed Housing Development for Former Tennis Court in Colwyn Bay Rejected by Planning Committee

The Conwy County Council’s planning committee has recently rejected a proposal by Northfield Property Development Ltd to build 14 homes on the former tennis court site at Oak Drive in Colwyn Bay. This site had previously been used by Rydal Penrhos School.

The initial recommendation by planning officers to approve the plans for the two separate applications, one for three homes and the other for eleven, was revised due to concerns raised by Welsh Water and the council’s waste officers. Issues regarding sewer connections, drainage, surface water, and road access were deemed significant and required attention.

During the planning committee meeting, a resident expressed opposition to the proposed development, citing concerns about its size, scale, potential environmental impact, and pollution during construction and occupation of the properties. The committee was divided in their opinions, with some proposing a deferral of the decision for resolution of outstanding issues, while others pushed for outright refusal of the plans.

Ultimately, the planning committee voted to reject both applications, stating that the proposed housing development would not be in the best interest of the area. Concerns about flooding and the need to address existing infrastructure issues before introducing new developments were emphasized.

The decision reflects the importance of thorough assessment and planning for proposed developments to mitigate potential issues such as drainage, traffic, and environmental impact. It also demonstrates a commitment to responsible and sustainable development in the region.
