Graham and Clint Powers, students of Hickory High School, achieved a significant victory at the 3A state doubles championship held at the Burlington Tennis Center on May 11. Their journey to this win began with their qualification at regionals on May 3 and culminated in a thrilling match against the Pearson brothers of Fike in the finals.
The Powers brothers demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament, easily dominating the first two rounds and facing tough competition in the semifinals. The showdown with East Region champions Vucinovic and Woerner ended in a hard-fought victory for Graham and Clint, as they claimed the first set 6-4 and secured the second set with a closely contested 7-5 score.
In the finals, the Pearson brothers posed a formidable challenge, pushing both sets to a 4-4 tie. However, the Powers brothers proved their mettle by breaking the Pearsons in both sets, ultimately triumphing with scores of 6-4, 6-4.
Hickory’s success wasn’t limited to the doubles championship, as Blake Walker also participated in the 3A singles state tournament. Though he faced a setback in the first round against Caryle of C.B. Aycock, his participation added to the overall spirited performance of Hickory High School.
Furthermore, Hickory’s achievements extended to the team competition, with the school’s No. 1 team advancing to the 3A West Region finals. The Red Tornadoes’ resounding 5-1 victory over West Henderson propelled them to the regional finals, marking their second consecutive appearance in the dual/team west regional championship.
With the upcoming regional finals on the horizon, the fierce competition is set to determine the ultimate contender for the state championship match on May 18 in Burlington. Hickory’s remarkable progress in both individual and team competitions is a testament to the dedication and talent of the school’s tennis athletes.
