The Whitemoss Tennis Court in East Kilbride has recently undergone a substantial transformation, thanks to a significant investment of £93,000. Supervised by the Lawn Tennis Association and funded by the South Lanarkshire Council, the UK Government, and the LTA Tennis Foundation, the maintenance has resulted in a remarkable improvement.
A ceremony was held on May 15 to celebrate the reopening of the courts, attended by esteemed individuals including South Lanarkshire Council Leader Joe Fagan (East Kilbride Central North) and Councillor Robert Brown (Rutherglen South), chair of the community and enterprise resources committee, alongside representatives from the LTA.
Members of the local community, including students from St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School, were given the opportunity to test the refurbished courts, which have undergone extensive improvements such as resurfacing, repainting, new nets, and a new entry gate system to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Councillor Fagan expressed his delight at the fantastic new look of the tennis courts and highlighted the enjoyment it will bring to the people of East Kilbride and beyond, especially as the tennis season gains momentum. He extended his gratitude to all partners involved in the project.
Councillor Brown noted the importance of the park tennis courts in providing opportunities for both children and adults to engage in physical activity, promoting significant physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits.
Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, commended the effort and dedication put into the restoration of the park tennis courts in South Lanarkshire Council, expressing her delight in seeing them open to the public again, in even better condition than before.
Sports Minister Stuart Andrew MP highlighted how the upgraded facilities in South Lanarkshire will create opportunities for the local community to stay active and potentially discover the next Andy Murray or Emma Raducanu.
The newly revamped courts will host weekly Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions with provided equipment and accommodate Barclays Local Tennis Leagues, offering friendly local social competitions to encourage community involvement.
For those interested in booking a session, all courts will be accessible on the LTA website, with the option of a ‘pay to play’ basis for £8.75 per court per hour or an annual pass. Additionally, there will be free sessions available to make tennis more affordable and accessible to a wider audience.
The revitalised Whitemoss Tennis Court stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and is not only a welcomed addition to the local sports facilities but also a symbol of community spirit and inclusivity.
