The Wargrave Tennis Club is pleased to announce the unveiling of two new state-of-the-art artificial clay courts. The official opening ceremony was overseen by club treasurer Richard Vertigan and chairman Michael Simpson.
These courts provide a safer playing surface, particularly in wet conditions, compared to traditional hard courts. In addition to better traction, the courts are softer underfoot, reducing the risk of injuries during play.
The decision to transition to the artificial clay surface was met with overwhelming support from 85 per cent of the club’s members in February. As a result, the club is considering plans to resurface two more courts next year to meet the growing demand.
Furthermore, 24 members recently participated in the club’s inaugural monthly social tournament of the new season. The competition included a series of matches led by Wendy Franklin and Sue Gutierrez, culminating in a round of pickleball tennis. The tournament concluded with a gathering at the clubhouse, allowing players to unwind and enjoy each other’s company.
The club has also announced the eagerly awaited restart of its Friday junior sessions, which drew an impressive attendance of over 80 juniors and parents for the first session of the season. These sessions are free for all junior members, emphasizing the importance of getting children of all ages onto the court and, most importantly, ensuring they have fun.
Additionally, the club recognized and honored the Friday night Duke of Edinburgh’s Award junior helper team from Piggott School, consisting of Leo Thompson, Finley Hodgkins, Leo Boisseau, Henry Smith, and Will Copland, showcasing the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent.
