Renowned rugby player Simon Zebo has recently announced his decision to retire from the sport at the conclusion of the current season, marking the end of a successful and illustrious career that he fondly described as a “dream come true.”
Throughout his career, the 34-year-old athlete has achieved an impressive record and has left an indelible mark in the world of rugby, especially with his outstanding performance for Munster, Ireland, and the Lions. Zebo has earned a total of 35 caps for his country, securing seven tries and playing a pivotal role in the squad’s victory in the 2015 Six Nations. He also notably participated in the World Cup during the same year.
Zebo’s contributions extended to the international stage, making three appearances for the Lions in 2013. Subsequently, he left Munster to join Racing 92 in 2018, culminating in an impressive tally of 60 tries in 144 appearances for the club. His exceptional stint in Paris saw him continue to shine as he scored 25 tries in 60 appearances.
Returning to Munster in 2021, Zebo continued to make strides, amassing 13 tries in 29 appearances over the past three seasons, a feat that undoubtedly aided Munster in clinching the URC title last year. His sensational performance has also seen him being recognized as Munster’s record try scorer with an outstanding 72 tries in 173 appearances thus far. Notably, Zebo holds the record for the most Champions Cup tries by any Irish player and ranks third on the all-time list of try-scorers in the competition.
Zebo’s journey in rugby began with his outstanding performances for PBC and Cork Constitution, where he secured a Munster Schools Senior Cup in 2007, in addition to two All-Ireland Leagues in 2008 and 2010. His professional career took off with his debut as an Academy player for Munster in 2010, eventually contributing to the club’s victory in the Magners League title the following season. This was soon followed by his debut for Ireland in 2012, solidifying his status as an esteemed athlete in the sport.
In light of his decision, Zebo expressed his gratitude towards his loved ones, teammates, coaches, and supporters, acknowledging their unwavering support and influence in his career. In a heartfelt statement, Zebo remarked, “After much thought, I’ve decided that this season will be my last playing the game I love. It has been a dream come true, making memories and friends for life and travelling the world with amazing people. A huge thank you to my family, friends, teammates, coaches and supporters – without ye none of this would have been possible. I am truly grateful for all the love and support over the years. I’ve loved every second, it’s been some craic and I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
