Portage High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Caleb Bohrer as the new head coach for the boys basketball program. The decision was made by a panel consisting of administrators, coaches, and community members, following the departure of Darrin Berger, who stepped down after five seasons in charge to focus on his family.
Bohrer, a native of Verona and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table. Having previously served as part of Berger’s staff for the last two seasons, Bohrer is no stranger to coaching at a high level, having worked as a varsity assistant and JV2 coach. Prior to this, he also gained coaching experience at La Crosse Aquinas and as an AAU coach with the Wisconsin Playmakers.
According to the Portage athletic director, Ed Carlson, Bohrer’s dedication to creating a positive culture and competitive environment, as well as his philosophy of fostering personal growth of student-athletes, aligns perfectly with the values of the school’s athletic department. Carlson also commended Bohrer’s blend of enthusiasm, positive energy, and passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
In addition to his coaching duties, Bohrer currently teaches physical education at Bartels Middle School in Portage. Carlson expressed confidence in Bohrer’s ability to lead the program to great success, citing his coaching philosophy that emphasizes not only athletic development, but also academic achievement and personal growth.
Furthermore, Bohrer is eager to work directly with the youth program, recognizing the importance of laying a strong foundation and tradition for Portage basketball at the grassroots level. With a focus on building a strong program, the school anticipates that under Bohrer’s leadership, the boys basketball team will thrive and achieve significant success.
While the boys basketball coaching position has been filled, Portage High School still has three coaching vacancies to be filled in the girls basketball, girls swimming, and girls volleyball programs. It was announced that there are anticipated hires for the girls basketball and girls swimming positions in the near future, while the girls volleyball coaching job remains open for applicants.
In the ever-competitive landscape of high school sports, having the right leadership in place is crucial for the success and development of student-athletes. With the appointment of Caleb Bohrer as the new boys basketball coach, Portage High School is poised to continue its legacy of athletic excellence and commitment to the growth of its student-athletes.
