Sallisaw Public Schools wasted no time in identifying their new boys’ basketball coach, and it appears they have found an ideal match in Vian native Zac Rogers. Recognized for his impressive credentials and coaching experience, Rogers is enthusiastic about the prospect of returning home and guiding the Sallisaw Black Diamonds to success on the basketball court.
“It is an incredible opportunity,” expressed Rogers. “The tradition of Sallisaw athletics is something I have always held in high regard, and now I am thrilled to be a part of it.”
Hailing from a background that includes coaching experience with the University of Texas-San Antonio and being part of Lon Kruger’s coaching staff with the Oklahoma Sooners, Rogers is well-versed in the intricacies of high-level basketball. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that coaching at the high school level will present its own distinct set of challenges.
“I will need to acquire a considerable amount of knowledge,” he conceded. “But it is a remarkable opportunity. It is a fantastic place for athletics, and I look forward to becoming a part of it.”
Stepping into the role formerly held by Chadd Gehrke, Rogers is resolute in his determination to continue the positive advancements that Gehrke initiated during his tenure as the boys’ basketball coach. He intends to concentrate on growth and development, with the aspiration of engaging the entire community in the process, from the youth to the alumni.
“Establishing a program requires the involvement of everyone,” emphasized Rogers. “Our primary focus will be on making progress each and every day, and the support of the entire community will be crucial in achieving that.”
Eager about the prospect of fostering youth development, Rogers has indicated that plans for a basketball camp are already in progress. However, he is mindful that assimilating into the new role will take time and has articulated his need to familiarize himself with the program and the players first.
Beyond the excitement of his new appointment, there is still more work to be done for Sallisaw Public Schools as they seek a new softball coach following the departure of Hillary Gehrke. With the board aiming to fill this position by the end of the month, it is evident that the school is currently undergoing a period of transition and change.
As Vian native Zac Rogers prepares for the new opportunity that awaits him as the boys’ basketball coach for Sallisaw, the school board is resolute in ensuring that all coaching positions are filled with suitable candidates. The community eagerly anticipates the positive impacts that these changes will bring to their sports programs.
