Rochester Mayo Finally Wins Girls Tennis State Tournament After 27 Years

After 27 years of trying, Rochester Mayo girls tennis team has finally won the state tournament! Coach Jeff Demaray, who has been with the team for nearly three decades, led the Spartans to their 26th appearance in the past 27 years. And this time, they went all the way. Mayo finished the season undefeated with a perfect 26-0 record and secured the Class 2A team championship with a 6-1 victory over Edina. It was a hard-fought match, with Edina putting up a strong fight, but the Spartans remained steady and clinched the win. Sophomore Ana Medina sealed the victory with a thrilling 3-set win at No. 4 singles. The team had incredible support from their fans, who cheered them on throughout the tournament. Mayo’s No. 1 singles player, Claire Loftus, expressed her joy and gratitude for the historic win. In the Class 1A championship, Blake emerged victorious over defending champion Rochester Lourdes, denying Rochester a sweep of the titles. Blake dominated the match, winning three of four singles matches and two of three doubles matches. It was Blake’s 14th girls tennis state championship. Despite the loss, Lourdes put up a strong fight and showcased their talent. Congratulations to both Mayo and Blake for their impressive victories!
