Rugby Union Star Carter Gordon Signs Big Deal with NRL’s Titans

The Gold Coast Titans have made a significant acquisition by securing Wallabies five-eighth player, Carter Gordon, in a move that deals a blow to Australian rugby. At 23 years old, Gordon was a key part of the Wallabies World Cup squad in 2023 and previously played as No 10 for the now-defunct Melbourne Rebels. He has signed a deal with the Titans until the end of 2026.

Joining Gordon in the switch to the NRL is fellow World Cup star Mark Nawaqanitawase, who will be playing for the Sydney Roosters after being signed from the NSW Waratahs. Meanwhile, Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i is making the opposite transition, moving from the Sydney Roosters to rugby union next season.

Two other members of the Australian team, NSW centre Izaia Perese and Melbourne backrower Josh Kemeny, have also opted to play overseas, contributing to the exodus from Australian rugby.

Titans CEO Steve Mitchell expressed his excitement about Gordon’s signing, noting the positive impact it will have on the club’s halves depth. He mentioned that veteran playmaker Kieran Foran is expected to sign a new deal, adding to the strength of the Titans’ lineup.

Mitchell shared, “He is arguably one of the most exciting young talents in rugby union both here and internationally and now the challenge of taking on the NRL is the next great chapter in his athletic career. Carter is going to be a great addition as a spine player and utility. He has an opportunity to work with Des Hasler and with a great squad. To have a high-quality current member of the Wallabies squad make a decision to join our campaign speaks volumes for what Des is doing and what this club is all about.”

Gordon, who has previously played rugby league in his junior days on the Sunshine Coast, expressed his enthusiasm about making the switch to the NRL. He acknowledged the challenge ahead but is eager to test himself in the new environment.

Speaking about his decision, Gordon remarked, “At 23, I feel like I had to take this opportunity now. I’m under no illusions and understand that this will be a massive challenge. I was really impressed with the Titans and the professionalism they displayed in our meetings. I’ve loved my time with rugby as it’s given me the opportunity to represent my country which I’ll always appreciate.”

Titans Coach Des Hasler also expressed his excitement about working with Gordon, praising his skills and determination to take on a new sporting challenge.

“Carter has competed well in rugby, representing his country and playing at the World Cup. What has impressed me is his attitude to test himself and take on the challenge of switching to a new code. He’s a skilful player who backs himself,” Hasler said.

The move of Carter Gordon to the NRL’s Titans is one of the latest in a series of high-profile changes between the rugby codes, adding another layer to the ongoing rivalry and talent exchange between the two sports.
