Interestingly, this win marked France’s first time at the top of the FISU podium since Rome in 2006. On the other hand, Japan clinched the men’s bronze medal by defeating Argentina with a score of 20-15.

In the women’s competition, Japan claimed the gold medal with a resounding 21-12 victory against Canada. Spain also displayed formidable performance, securing the women’s bronze by defeating Australia with a score of 36-7.

The previous edition of the championship was hosted in Namibia, where South Africa claimed the men’s title, and France emerged as the women’s champions. Rugby Sevens also made an appearance at the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade, with Japan securing gold in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Apart from the matches, the World University Championship’s village entertained spectators, visitors, and elementary school students with various activities and booths, along with the exploration of local culture and products. This village served as a vibrant hub of engagement and interaction, adding to the overall experience of the championship.

The championship received support from World Rugby and FISU, highlighting the collaborative effort to showcase the global growth of the sport. The successful organization of the event, managed by the French University Sports Federation (FFSU) and supported by 75 local volunteers, resulted in the transmission of the FISU flag to Stellenbosch, South Africa, where the next edition of the championship will be held in 2026.

As the spotlight shifts to the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024, the recent victory of France has ignited the hopes of the nation for further success on home soil.
