Victorious Stourport High School Secures Title of South West Basketball Champions

The talented young basketball players from Stourport High School have emerged triumphant in the South West final, outshining 60 other year seven teams in the Junior National Basketball Association region.

The 12-member squad displayed exceptional skills as they clinched the title, excelling in both their league matches and knock-out play-offs to secure a spot in the finals held at the University of West England, Bristol.

Playing under the moniker of NBA professional teams, Stourport’s Milwaukee Bucks secured a resounding victory over The New York Knicks by 17 points in the semi-finals. In an exhilarating final match against Portland Trailblazers, they triumphed with a three-point lead, showcasing their prowess on the court.

Sam Coles, a finalist for the Worcestershire New Teacher of the Year and the PE teacher and basketball coach at Stourport High, commended the team, stating, “They were amazing, the lads played their hearts out and are well-deserved winners.”

Notable player Alfie Waldron, 12, also shone in the shooting competition, scoring an impressive 11 points in just one minute.

Last September, the school introduced an elite basketball programme for sixth-form students, further enhancing its established elite rugby programme. These programmes offer top-notch coaching and competitive games, alongside academic studies, catering to students aspiring for professional careers in sports, be it as players or in various off-pitch roles.

Principal Sara Peace expressed pride in the accomplishments of the year seven team, emphasizing their determination, dedication, and skill. She also lauded Mr. Coles for his exceptional coaching and unwavering commitment to providing the best opportunities and guidance to the students, allowing them to reach their full potential.

In addition to their league triumph, each player was awarded a championship ring, while the participating schools were presented with an NBA Basketball England kit.

The success of Stourport High School’s basketball team stands as a testament to the positive impact of the elite programmes, inspiring and influencing sports participation among students across different year levels.

The accomplishments of these young athletes are a source of immense pride for the school and the local community, showcasing the remarkable talent and potential nurtured within the educational institution.
