The Ukrainian Hockey Camp and Cultural Exchange has entered its third day in the picturesque city of Erie. Following months of travel and immersion in the sights and cultures of various countries, the Ukrainian hockey players find themselves in the heart of Pennsylvania.
Herman Klymenko, a Ukrainian hockey player, expressed his delight at the experience, stating, “It is truly a wonderful experience. I have made many friends.” The camp has incorporated intensive training alongside cultural activities such as jumping hurdles, relay racing, and plentiful time on the ice.
Van Irvin, a native of Erie, shared his thoughts on the impressive dedication and practice displayed by the Ukrainian players. “It has been truly remarkable. Their commitment to practice is highly impressive,” he said. Irvin, who had previously only scrimmaged with the Ukrainian team, has fully immersed himself in the camp this year.
Discussing the differences in training approaches, Irvin commented on the shift from focusing on puck handling and shooting to working on edge work. This change in perspective has provided valuable insight for both the Ukrainian players and their American counterparts.
The Ukrainian players have not only relished the rigorous training but have also taken pleasure in exploring the city of Erie. Eduard Pohrib, Klymenko’s teammate, expressed his appreciation for the new experiences, stating, “I also enjoy exploring the city as it is different from my country.”
Despite the typical age range of the players being from 12 to 14 years old, Carson Denbow has stood out as the youngest player at just eight years old. Despite his tender age, Denbow, an Erie native, aspires to become a goalie for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Ukrainian Hockey Camp and Cultural Exchange has not only provided valuable training and learning opportunities for the players, but it has also fostered a spirit of camaraderie and cultural understanding among individuals from different backgrounds. As the camp progresses, the exchange of skills and experiences is sure to leave a lasting impact on all those involved.
As Day Three comes to a close, the Ukrainian hockey players remain enthusiastic about their time in Erie, and the rich experiences they have gained both on and off the ice.
