Professional golfer Matthew Wolff has expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from Bubba Watson, who serves as his captain at RangeGoats. This comes after Wolff openly discussed the challenges he has faced on and off the golf course in recent years.
Once regarded as one of the PGA Tour’s most promising up-and-coming talents, Wolff made the decision to join LIV Golf in 2022. In the 2023 season, he was signed by Brooks Koepka and played for Smash GC alongside Brooks’ brother Chase and former PGA Tour member Jason Kokrak. However, things took a turn for the worse when Wolff had a public falling out with his captain Koepka, resulting in harsh criticism from the five-time major champion.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated last summer, Koepka expressed his disappointment, stating that Wolff’s talent was being squandered due to his lack of dedication and commitment to the game. This criticism occurred mid-season in 2023, and despite the challenge, Wolff continued to play under the Smash franchise.
Eventually, Wolff was able to make a change during the offseason and joined Watson’s RangeGoats for the 2024 season. Reflecting on his experience, Wolff spoke highly of captain Watson, emphasising Watson’s focus on character and personal development over golf scores. Wolff also opened up about his struggles with mental health, particularly the pressure he felt after achieving early success on the PGA Tour.
Despite his challenges, Wolff is currently ranked 16th in the season-long standings, with a notable third-place finish in Miami. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of mental well-being and the impact of a supportive team environment in competitive sports.
