Sumit Nagal set to represent India in men’s singles tennis at upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Indian tennis prodigy, Sumit Nagal, has been included in the men’s singles entry list for the Paris 2024 Olympics, a recent announcement from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) revealed. This will mark Nagal’s second appearance at the Olympics, following his participation in Tokyo 2020.

During his previous Olympic appearance, Nagal demonstrated his skill by defeating Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin but ultimately suffered a loss against Daniil Medvedev in the subsequent round. However, it is evident that his perseverance and hard work have paid off, resulting in his selection for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

The men’s and women’s singles events at the Paris 2024 Olympics are expected to feature 64 players each. In the men’s singles category, the top 56 eligible players, according to the ATP rankings, were allocated quotas for their respective countries. Despite Nagal’s ranking at 77th during the qualifying window, he secured his spot due to multiple withdrawals and an outstanding performance in recent tournaments.

Nagal’s remarkable journey to Paris 2024 began with a career-high ranking of 138th in January and has been characterized by significant achievements, such as breaking into the top 100 after winning the Chennai Open earlier this year. His excellent form is further underscored by his rise from 95th to 77th in the singles tennis rankings, positioning him as a formidable contender at the upcoming Olympics.

In addition to Nagal, the Indian Olympic tennis team will also include Rohan Bopanna, who will compete in the men’s doubles event alongside N Sriram Balaji. Bopanna, a former world No. 4 in the men’s doubles rankings, and Balaji, ranked 67th, are set to bring their expertise to the prestigious event in Paris.

As the duo prepares for the Paris Olympics, they are currently showcasing their skills at the Wimbledon 2024 Grand Slam event in London. Bopanna is partnering with Australia’s Matthew Ebden, while Balaji has teamed up with Great Britain’s Luke Johnson for the competition.

Following their Wimbledon participation, Bopanna and Balaji are scheduled to take part in the ATP 500 events in Hamburg and Umaag, further refining their abilities before heading to the Paris Olympics.

Despite Nagal’s early exit from Wimbledon, his unwavering determination and impressive performances in recent tournaments have solidified his position at the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics. The Indian tennis contingent, including Nagal, Bopanna, and Balaji, is undoubtedly poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming event.

With their steadfast dedication and remarkable achievements, the Indian tennis stars are prepared to leave an indelible mark at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
