France Rugby Team Members Arrested in Argentina for Alleged Sexual Assault

The French rugby team currently touring Argentina has become embroiled in controversy following the arrest of two of its members on suspicion of sexual assault. The detained players, Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, were apprehended in Buenos Aires and are due to be transported to Mendoza, where the alleged crime occurred. This development comes in the wake of France’s 28-13 Test victory over Argentina on Saturday.

In Mendoza province, a judicial official has deployed a commission to Buenos Aires to escort the players back to Mendoza and facilitate necessary examinations. Should the evidence corroborate the victim’s account, the players will be formally charged. The reported assault is said to have taken place at the Diplomatic Hotel in Mendoza, where the French team was lodged for the Test match.

Prompt action by the Mendoza prosecutor’s office led to the immediate arrest of the two players following the allegations. Notwithstanding the legal proceedings, France is slated to journey to Montevideo for a match against Uruguay before returning to Buenos Aires for a second Test against Argentina.

French Rugby Federation (FFR) president Florian Grill responded to the incident with grave concern for the victim and underscored the imperative of a comprehensive investigation. He condemned the alleged actions, asserting that they are contrary to the principles and values of the sport.

This development is compounded by an unrelated scandal involving France full-back Melvyn Jaminet, who was withdrawn from the squad in Argentina due to a video in which he made racist remarks. The FFR denounced Jaminet’s comments as “entirely unacceptable and in opposition to the fundamental values of our sport.” Additionally, French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera praised the swift response to the controversy.

Following his expulsion, Jaminet issued a public apology, expressing regret for his comments and affirming that racism has no place in society.

The evolving events have cast a shadow over the French rugby team’s tour of Argentina, prompting extensive scrutiny and calls for accountability and a steadfast commitment to upholding the values of respect and integrity within the sport.
