The Helensburgh Rugby Club has recently appointed a new head coach for its senior men’s team, Mr. Gregor Mathieson. With a solid background in youth coaching and previous playing experience at Loch Lomond RFC, Mr. Mathieson is poised to lead both the first and second teams as they prepare for the upcoming season in West Division 2 and West Reserve Division 2.
Mr. Mathieson expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I’m eager to get started. After more than a decade coaching juniors, I feel ready to step up and contribute to the advancement of Lomond-Helensburgh first and second XVs. I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to showcasing some thrilling rugby.”
Additionally, Mr. Mathieson will work closely with assistant coach Mr. Iain Fletcher, whose wealth of experience is expected to enhance the performance of both teams in the upcoming 2024-25 season.
A representative from the club highlighted Mr. Mathieson’s extensive background in youth coaching, emphasizing his expertise in refining players’ techniques, including the art of the perfect kick-through using the Kick10 Ball, a specialized tool he has developed to improve kicking skills in rugby. The Kick10 Ball is designed with 10 motifs to assist players in executing their kicks more effectively.
The Lomond-Helensburgh first XV is scheduled to start their league campaign against Clydebank at Ardencaple on August 24, while the second XV will begin their competitive season at home against Strathendrick on September 14. Meanwhile, pre-season training for both adult and under-18 teams will continue at Ardencaple every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm.
