The eagerly awaited second edition of the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championship commenced at the iconic Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The grand opening on Thursday evening was graced by the esteemed presence of the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who honoured the event with his esteemed leadership.
The tournament has attracted a noteworthy participation of 94 talented Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters from 15 countries and regions across Asia. The lively inauguration unfolded into a spectacular one-hour spectacle that showcased a vibrant parade of the athletes, followed by the heartfelt oaths of dedication from the athletes and referees. Moreover, the cultural richness of Cambodia was highlighted through captivating traditional martial arts performances.
Prime Minister Hun Manet extended a warm welcome to all the participants, expressing his profound appreciation for their embodiment of true sportsmanship, friendship and cooperation. He emphasized that this event stands as a testament to the positive impact it has on the realms of sports, tourism, culture, society, economy, and Cambodia’s reputation on the global stage. Furthermore, he acknowledged the event’s instrumental role in strengthening the spirit of solidarity and friendship among participating sports delegates.
Under the esteemed leadership, the royal government of Cambodia has placed great emphasis on the advancement of the sports sector within the country. The event has received a significant collaboration from the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA). This collaboration has resulted in the largest-ever congregation of MMA fighters in Cambodia, signifying a momentous stride in the country’s sporting landscape.
President Thong Khon of NOCC revealed that the top eight winners of the championship will be granted the esteemed opportunity to participate in the sixth Asian Indoor and Martial Art Games 2024. This prestigious event is scheduled to be hosted by Thailand in the upcoming month of November. The AMMA, founded in Singapore, has been pivotal in the development and promotion of MMA activities across Asia. It stands as the revered pan-Asian mixed martial arts federation, having garnered recognition from the OCA.
MMA, being a full-contact hybrid combat sport, amalgamates striking, grappling and ground fighting techniques from various global fighting styles. The first edition of the games hosted by Thailand in August 2023 saw Cambodian athletes clinch two bronze medals, marking their triumphant presence on the international stage.
