A professional rugby league player originally from Leeds, currently residing in Australia, has been fined £1,000 after confessing to his part in a brawl with security personnel at a Wetherspoon pub in the city centre. The 24-year-old player, Lochlan McGill, along with two co-defendants, pleaded guilty to affray.
The altercation took place at Beckett’s Bank in Leeds in September 2022, where the trio engaged in a physical altercation with the pub’s door staff. The court was informed that the altercation involved grabbing, pushing, shoving, and some physical blows, resulting in one of the security staff members requiring hospital treatment.
During the sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, His Honour Judge Neil Clark KC suggested that the individuals’ actions were likely influenced by alcohol consumption. The prosecutor revealed that the incident occurred at around 17:30 BST on 24 September 2022 and emphasized the physical violence that occurred during the confrontation.
One of the security staff members stated in a victim impact statement that while he was not seriously injured, the incident had a significant psychological impact on him. Judge Clarke emphasized that it is unacceptable for individuals to display such behavior due to excessive drinking.
McGill, who had previously played for various rugby league teams and currently earns approximately £2,000 a month as a professional player and scaffolder, was described by his solicitor as having only restrained the door staff and not used any further violence beyond that. The solicitor for one of the co-defendants expressed his client’s shame and regret for his involvement in the altercation.
Judge Clarke acknowledged that the three men were generally of good character and expressed that their actions were out of character, accepting their apologies and remorse. Two of the defendants were ordered to provide unpaid work and compensation to the victim, while the third was placed under a curfew and also ordered to compensate the victim.
