A Scots Toddler’s Brave Battle Against a Tennis Ball-Sized Tumour

The Brennan family from Airdrie has received the distressing news that their 16-month-old son, Kevin Jr, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of a tennis ball. This shocking revelation comes just a year after their other son underwent heart surgery. Despite initially being informed that their son was suffering from a viral infection, the family’s perseverance in seeking a second opinion led to the life-saving diagnosis.

Kevin Jr fell ill in May and after several visits to the GP and a hospital, the parents, Samantha and Kevin Sr, were reassured that their son’s symptoms were caused by a viral infection. However, as the young boy’s condition deteriorated, the family sought a second opinion at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Following a scan, they received the devastating news that their son had a brain tumour. According to the medical professionals, had they delayed seeking treatment any longer, the outcome may have been tragically different.

Kevin was immediately rushed in for emergency surgery, during which 95% of the tumour was successfully removed. However, the family remains on edge as Kevin is scheduled to undergo another operation. The remaining 5% of the tumour on the brainstem poses a significant challenge. The family has been informed that the upcoming treatment options include chemotherapy and radiotherapy, although there are no guarantees of a full recovery.

Throughout this distressing ordeal, the Brennan family has been unwaveringly by Kevin’s side, staying at the Ronald McDonald House next to the hospital. Despite the challenges they face, the family remains resolute in staying positive and hopeful. Sonny, Kevin’s younger brother, who underwent heart surgery in the same hospital just last year, is a living testament to the strength and resilience of the family.

Kevin Sr and Samantha have expressed their gratitude to the medical staff and are determined to take each day as it comes, focusing on Kevin’s recovery. The family is doing everything possible to support Kevin, and they have set up a fundraiser to explore alternative treatments after his upcoming surgery.

In response to the concerns raised by the Brennan family, Ross McGuffie, NHS Lanarkshire Chief Officer, has assured the family that their worries will be addressed directly. He has encouraged the family to reach out to the patient affairs team to ensure that their concerns are properly attended to.

The family is buoyed by the support they have received and remains optimistic about Kevin’s future. Despite the challenges they face, they are determined to take life one day at a time and are hopeful for a positive outcome.
